Rosie Filming Locations

“Rosie” was a British sitcom broadcast from 1977 to 1981. The series focused on PC Penrose, affectionately known as “Rosie,” a young and inexperienced police officer portrayed by Paul Greenwood.

Written by Roy Clarke, “Rosie” followed an earlier series titled “The Growing Pains of PC Penrose,” set in the fictitious Yorkshire town of Slagcaster. The storyline continues in “Rosie,” with Series 1, Episode 1 showing PC Penrose’s return from Slagcaster to his hometown, the fictional Ravensbay.

Notably, Scarborough largely served as the backdrop for Ravensbay during filming. This post explores some of the key filming locations used in the sitcom.

Home of PC Penrose

One of the most common locations used for filming was the home of PC Penrose shared with his mum, Aunt Ida and Uncle Norman. This took a bit of tracking down but I can confirm house used was at the sea end of Sea Cliff Road, Scarborough. Whilst it has changed a little over the years it is still very recognisable as you can see from the Google Street view below.

Police Station

Seen throughout the sitcom is the police station where PC Penrose works. This was filmed at the former Scarborough Police station which has since been redeveloped. The building opposite as shown in the right screenshot below is still very similar today which helped confirm the location.

Train Station

At the start of Series 1 Episode 1 we see Gillian meets PC Penrose (Rosie) at the train station. Scarborough train station was the filming location used and still very recognisable.

Poachers Barn

Seen in episode 1 of series 1 where there is a disturbance at the pub. The pub used was the Poachers Barn in Osgodby, Scarborough.
