The Green Green Grass is a BBC One sitcom created by John Sullivan, serving as both a sequel and spin-off of the beloved Only Fools and Horses. It stars John Challis and Sue Holderness, reprising their roles as Boycie and Marlene. The premise centres on Boycie having given evidence against the dangerous Driscoll brothers, only to discover they are about to be released from prison and know exactly who informed on them. He hastily sells up his Peckham used car business and buys a farm in rural Shropshire, dragging along a less-than-thrilled Marlene and their son Tyler.
Four series and three Christmas specials aired on BBC One between 2005 and 2009. The show mines its humour from the classic fish-out-of-water scenario of a sharp-tongued London wide boy struggling to adapt to country life, and while it never quite matched its celebrated parent show, it had a loyal audience and gave Boycie and Marlene a chance to shine as lead characters in their own right.
The Green Green Grass Filming Locations
The majority of scenes from The Green Green Grass were internal and were filmed in front of a live audience at Teddington Studios in Middlesex. There were however some key external filming locations used and these are outlined below.
Winterdown Farm
Winterdown Farm, the home of Mr and Mrs Boyce and their son Tyler along with Rottweiler, Earl. The core external filming location used throughout the sitcom, set in the location of Oakham, Shropshire.
The actual house and farm used for external filming was in Wigmore Abbey in Adforton, near Ludlow. At the time of filming it was actually the home of John Challis (Boycie) and his wife Carol. Following John’s passing Carol sold the property to be closer to family.
The below shows some screen grabs of the property used in the filming and a Google Street View widget of the lane just outside the property which is on private land and therefore not fully captured.
During the sale of Wigmore Abbey c. 2023, Mark Wiggin Estate Agents took a portfolio of photos of the property that can be viewed here. You can also pay to visit the property, more information on this is available here.
