Although set in Byker, the building used for the majority of on location filming throughout the children’s TV program Byker Grove was in fact in Benwell area of Newcastle upon Tyne. The building used was The Mitre, Benwell Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne NE15 6LX (The building is also known as Benwell Towers.)
These days the building is home of Bahr Academy a faith school.
PJ’s Paint Balling Accident
In Series 4 Episode 20, PJ takes off is face protection to shout louder to warn his team mates that they area being approached. However with his face protection off, PJ is caught off-guard and shot in the face by Debbie and Amanda. The accident leaves PJ permanently blinded.
The paint balling scenes were filmed at Aydon Castle, Off Aydon Road, Corbridge NE45 5PJ
Other Locations
Many other locations were used in and around Newcastle upon Tyne for filming across the 18 series that were created between 1989 and 2006.
